April 10 Puerto Egas

Thursday, April 10. In the afternoon, the ship moved again and we disembarked on Puerto Egas (wet landing) for a hike along the coast. The terrain is almost all lava flow so you had to be careful not to step on a marine Iguana.

Well, it rained! First time on our trip and Carol and were not prepared so we got soaked. There was general panic to protect the camera gear but we set off anyway. The rain showers were off and on for part of the walk and then it dried up. By that time my camera was full of condensation which led to some interesting visual effects like this shot of a Galapagos Heron.

Some interesting areas included lava tubes which had collapsed creating a sheltered cove for seals and the occasional turtle.

The birds, in particular, had no fear of humans and would come right up and pose.

And you could find friends in the strangest of places.

Altogether a very interesting place with very different terrain from any other place we had visited.

That eveing we had a BBQ dinner on the “sky deck” of the ship. Very fun.
