This morning we landed at Waterboat Point / Gonzales Videla Station. This is a Chilean Summer base named after a previous President. There’s actually people here!
This is the place where two crazy English explorers, Thomas Bashaw & Max Lester spent a winter with only an up-turned boat for shelter. Presumed dead, they survived to become legend. Penguins outnumber people by a vast margin, however. The weather was quite mild and under foot we trudged through a smelly “soup” of slush, mud and penguin poop.
More Penguins
Even a white one (Leucistic)
And, while most Pengins already had eggs or chicks, some were still having a go.
This was also the place where Kayakers came out to play.
In the afternoon, the weather turned nasty - snow and wind. We had intended to land at Neko Harbor but it was too dangerous to land. So, we cruised by and were rewarded with sightings of Killer Whales and also Humbacks playing around.
It’s a mystery why they do what they do.
But wait, there’s more!
They put on quite a show.
This evening we had another enjoyable dinner with our friends Kevin, Lisa Mark & Mauree Jane. It has been a real treat to travel with them and share pretty well every experience.
